Pickleball’s history dates back to the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. It was created by three friends – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum.
On a lazy summer day, they couldn’t find a shuttlecock for badminton, so they improvised by using a plastic ball and some old ping pong paddles. At first, they played by volleying over a 60-inch badminton net, but eventually lowered the net down to 36 inches.
This innovative blend of ping pong, badminton, and tennis marked the birth of pickleball.
Fast forward 56 years later to July 2021, National Pickleball Day was created by pickleball instructor, Deirdre Morris. This day is dedicated to celebrate and raise awareness for the sport of Pickleball, which is currently the fastest-growing sport in America.
In the US, National Pickleball Day is celebrated every year on August 8, while in Canada it is celebrated four days later, on August 12th.
